About Trevi Fountain Underground — Vicus Caprarius City of Water Ticket
The site was discovered by accident in the 1990s during renovation work on a cinema, when workers broke through into a buried Roman neighbourhood. What emerged was an insula, a multi-storey residential block from the first century AD, later converted into a grand domus with mosaics and marble. Alongside it sat an enormous cistern, the castellum aquae, which collected and distributed water from the Aqua Virgo across the district.
Walking through, the scale of it registers slowly. These were the ground floors and basements of real homes, with water channels still running, brick walls still standing and the aqueduct audible nearby. A small museum area displays what was recovered during excavation, including coins, amphorae, oil lamps and a striking marble head identified as Alexander Helios.
The contrast is what makes it memorable. Minutes earlier you were in one of the most crowded squares in Europe. Down here it is cool, quiet and almost empty.
The visit takes around 20 to 40 minutes depending on whether you go self-guided or with a guide.
