About Casa Milà — La Pedrera Ticket
Built as a vast private residence for wealthy developer Pere Milà and his wife Rosario Segimon, Casa Milà is Gaudí's second most famous structure after the Sagrada Família church. The house's curving cliff-face walls quickly earned it the nickname La Pedrera, or The Quarry, amongst locals. Built between 1906 and 1912, it broke every rule of early twentieth-century architecture — no straight walls, no load-bearing interior columns, no right angles on the roof. A century later it still feels like the future. Barcelona Life
The visit is structured across three main spaces that together reveal the full depth of Gaudí's genius. The rooftop with its thirty warrior chimneys is the highlight — a sculptural terrace unlike anything else in architecture, where the twisted and helmeted forms of the ventilation shafts and stairwells create an otherworldly landscape that has inspired comparisons to science fiction, ancient mythology, and abstract sculpture simultaneously. You can get up close to Gaudí's chimneys and there is one floor devoted to the architect's models and technical insights into his work. The Espai Gaudí in the attic is an extraordinary parabolic-arched space housing an exceptional collection of scale models, structural drawings, photographs, and multimedia installations explaining the mathematical and natural principles behind Gaudí's organic forms. The interior of the flat which visitors are shown into is really well preserved and offers a fascinating glimpse into the past — the Pedrera Apartment has been meticulously restored to its original 1910s condition, with original furniture, objects, and decoration recreating the atmosphere of bourgeois life in Gaudí's Barcelona. Go between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM and after 4:30 PM for the smallest crowds — the rooftop is most enjoyable with space to move around and photograph the chimneys without other visitors in every frame. Book the first morning slot or the Night Experience to avoid midday crowds and heat. Note that the closure of the upper floors at La Pedrera begins 15 minutes before scheduled closure times — arrive well before closing to access the rooftop.
