About St. Mark’s Campanile Ticket

St. Mark’s Campanile is the tallest structure in Venice and the one you can see from almost anywhere in the lagoon. Rising 98.6 metres from Piazza San Marco beside the basilica, Venetians nicknamed it El Paron, the master, and it has watched over the city for centuries.
Its origins reach back to the twelfth century, though the tower took its present form in the early sixteenth. The original served as a lookout for approaching ships and, famously, as the spot where Galileo Galilei demonstrated his telescope to the Venetian authorities. It also provided the stage for the Flight of the Angel, the tightrope spectacle performed for the Doge during Carnival.
In 1902 the entire tower collapsed into the square, remarkably without a single fatality. Venice resolved to rebuild it exactly as it had been, and the reconstructed Campanile reopened in 1912, faithful to the original down to the detail.
What sets it apart from Venice’s other viewpoints is the lift. Instead of a staircase, you ascend to the bell chamber in around 45 seconds, which makes the view accessible to everyone. From up there the city makes sense in a way it never does at street level, with the canals threading between rooftops and the lagoon islands scattered out towards the horizon.
Allow 30 to 40 minutes for the visit, including the audio guide.
Book through Thrillark and secure your entry at the best available rate, so you skip the queue in the square and head straight up.
