Dubai being a Muslim country is renowned for its vibrant and diverse cultures, which make it a special place to live and work for people from all backgrounds. Under one roof, you can find people from various cultures and traditions coexisting peacefully. A large portion of migrant workers from India and Sri Lanka in the UAE practice Hinduism. There are a few Hindu temples and places of worship in and around Bur Dubai because a substantial part of the population in Dubai is made up of Hindu expats. In Bur Dubai Old Souk, the first Hindu temple in Dubai was built above the shops. Even today, the same Hindu temple still stands tall and welcomes visitors from all over the city with open arms.  A new Hindu temple will soon be opening in Dubai’s Jebel Ali in October 2022 on the occasion of Dussehra, a major Hindu festival. The temple is a blend of Indian and Arabic architecture and is home to 16 deities, the main deity being lord Shiva along with lord Krishna, Ganesha, Mahalakshmi, Guruvayoorappan, Ayyappan, and others as well as a knowledge room, community center, and welcoming space for people of all faiths. The temple symbolizes Dubai’s respect and spirit of religious tolerance.

When will be the temple open to the public:

The temple will open to the public on 5 October 2022 at the festival of Dussehra.

Dubai’s new temple timings will be from 6:30 AM– 20:00 PM, and appointment-based bookings to visit the temple have already begun since September 2022. The Vedic shlokas are chanted twice daily, from 7:30 AM to 11:00 AM in the morning and from 15:30 PM to 20:30 PM. There are 14 Indian pandits who perform this ritual. The chants are open to devotees and guests of the temple. The “Worship Village” in Jebel Ali, Dubai, is home to the city’s first independent Hindu temple. There will be two phases to the new temple’s opening: On October 5, 2022, the temple will officially open to the public. By January 14, 2023, weddings and other private events will be permitted on the temple grounds as part of the second phase, which also sees the opening of the community room and knowledge room to the public.

Infrastructure of the Temple:

There are 16 podiums with intricate designs in the roomy octagonal prayer hall, each honoring a different deity from across India. Dark stone is used to create statues of the gods in the southern Indian subcontinent. Shiva, a Hindu god, will be joined by 15 other deities on the central platform. Along with the South Indian gods Guruvayoorappan and Ayyappan, the prayer hall would also be a place of worship for the Hindu goddess Mahalakshmi, Ganesha, and Krishna. The Sikh holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib, will have a dedicated area in the shrine. Tulsi (holy basil) plants, mundan (tonsuring), and other religious practices now each have their own unique platform in a designated area.

The lavish interior and exterior of the temple are decorated with nine tall spires, graceful pillars, and exquisite white marble statues. The temple also features lofty concrete pillars adorned with bells, elephants, and floral designs, as well as enormous, enormous walnut-wood doors. The temple has a fully functional kitchen as well as a dry and cold storage area. Additionally, the library and community center both have several LCDs installed. The facilities are open to the public and can be used for a variety of events, such as interfaith gatherings and family-friendly educational programs. At the temple, a fairly large communal palace is available for hosting both public and private occasions like weddings, havans, and other rituals.

How to book for visits?

In order to guarantee the security of all visitors during Covid-19, temple authorities have as of yet installed a QR-code-based appointment system. Visitors who want to visit the brand-new Hindu temple in Dubai can reserve their visitation times on the Hindu Temple Dubai’s official website, and they will be welcomed inside the temple during the times they have reserved. After the month of October is over, the public can visit the temple whenever it’s open without having to make an online reservation. For the sake of avoiding lines and adhering to the Covid-19 social distancing protocols, visitors are advised to take public transportation or carpool to the new Hindu temple in Dubai.
